Tours at Uluṟu mostly depart from the hotels at Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort), and the busiest are timed around sunrise and sunset. If you are flying in and do not want to drive, two or three well-chosen tours can cover nearly everything.

How to choose

  • One morning, maximum coverage: a sunrise and Kata Tjuṯa tour (above) gives you both icons in a single half-day.
  • Want the stories: a guided base walk adds Aṉangu culture, plant knowledge and context you would miss walking alone — see the Base Walk guide.
  • A special dawn: the Field of Light sunrise tour lets you see the installation in darkness before the sun comes up — see Field of Light.
  • Serious walking: a Valley of the Winds tour at Kata Tjuṯa is the best way to tackle the park’s finest walk with a guide — see Valley of the Winds.
  • Coming from Alice Springs with one day: a long same-day return tour exists, but staying at Yulara at least one night is a much better experience — see Alice Springs to Uluru.

Other ways to experience Uluṟu

  • Scenic flights by helicopter or light plane give a sense of scale that is impossible from the ground.
  • Camel rides run from a camel farm near Yulara at sunrise and sunset.
  • Motorcycle and Segway tours run at the base of Uluṟu at times — check current operators.
  • Dinner experiences under the stars are popular for a special night.

What to check before booking

  1. Park pass: some tours include it, many do not. Buy yours online if not included.
  2. Pickup: most tours collect from all Ayers Rock Resort hotels and the campground.
  3. Heat policy: walks may be shortened in extreme heat.
  4. Cancellation: flexible cancellation is useful given desert weather.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Uluru tour?

For most visitors with limited time, a sunrise and Kata Tjuṯa morning tour covers the two highlights. Add a sunset tour or the Field of Light for the evening.

Do Uluru tours include the park pass?

Some do and some do not. Check each listing; if the pass is not included, buy it online from Parks Australia.

Can I do an Uluru day trip from Alice Springs?

Yes, but it is a very long day with about 900 km of driving in total. An overnight stay is strongly recommended.
