The Base Walk circles Uluṟu on a mostly flat, well-made track. It takes about 3.5 hours at a comfortable pace, plus stops. You can start from the Mala car park or the Kuniya car park and walk it in either direction, or do short sections only.

Highlights

  • Mala Walk (about 2 km return) — caves with rock art and a view into Kantju Gorge. Ranger-guided walks run here daily at set times; check at the Cultural Centre.
  • Kantju Gorge — a sheer, shaded amphitheatre where water collects after rain.
  • Mutitjulu Waterhole — one of the rock’s few permanent waterholes, reached via the Kuniya Walk.
  • Lungkata and Liru walks — sections linked to Tjukurpa stories, with interpretive signs.

Respect sensitive sites

Several sections of Uluṟu are sacred to Aṉangu. Signs ask visitors not to photograph or film these areas. Please follow them.

Heat and safety

  • Start at sunrise in warmer months and finish by mid-morning.
  • Carry plenty of water — there are water taps at some points, but do not rely on them.
  • Some walks close at 11 am on days forecast at 36°C or above.
  • Bikes can be hired at the Cultural Centre for a faster loop.

Shorter alternatives

If you do not have time for the full loop, combine the Mala Walk and the Kuniya Walk — together they show the best of the rock in about 2 hours.
