Uluṟu’s famous colour changes are caused by low-angle sunlight on its iron-rich sandstone. In the minutes either side of sunrise and sunset the rock shifts through purples, oranges and deep reds, and on clear days the effect is remarkable.

Sunrise viewing areas

Talinguru Nyakunytjaku is the main sunrise viewing area, on the dunes east of Uluṟu with views of both Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa. It has a large car park, boardwalks, viewing platforms and toilets. Arrive about 30–45 minutes before sunrise for the best colour in the sky.

Kata Tjuṯa dune viewing is a quieter alternative, with Kata Tjuṯa close and Uluṟu on the horizon.

Sunset viewing areas

Uluṟu Sunset Viewing Area (separate car and coach areas) on the western side gives the classic view of the rock glowing at sunset. Arrive 30–45 minutes early to find a spot.

Kata Tjuṯa Sunset Viewing Area is about 25 km from Uluṟu and usually less crowded.

Timing

Sunrise and sunset times vary considerably through the year. The park opening hours are set around them, so check Parks Australia’s current hours before planning. In winter, sunrise is around 7:30 am local time; in summer it is much earlier.

Tips

  • Bring warm layers for winter sunrises — temperatures can be close to freezing.
  • Turn around: the sky behind you is often as spectacular as the rock.
  • Stay 10–15 minutes after sunset — the afterglow is often the best part.
  • Do not use drones; recreational drone use in the park is not permitted.

Getting there without a car

Frequently asked questions

Is sunrise or sunset better at Uluru?

Both are worth seeing. Sunset gives the classic glowing-red rock; sunrise is quieter, cooler and shows both Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa together.

How early should I get to Uluru sunrise?

About 30–45 minutes before sunrise, allowing time to drive from Yulara and pass the entry station.
